Avoiding That Summer Slump
I won’t even ask about New Year’s Resolutions. If you’re like most people, they were likely long gone by February. But wait, you’re not like most people, are you, my fellow communicator?
I try to squeeze in some goalsetting in my presentations, as I did in my keynote earlier this year in DC. Doesn’t matter when you set goals, as long as you have some and make progress toward them. Something pulling you forward in an intentional direction – your North Star.
Summers are tough though. You want to be outside more. You want to take more breaks, maybe travel a bit. Exercise. Calm the mind. Wait, those sound like goals!
Maybe you’re on course, off course, or need a new course. All of these are OK. The key is to notice where you are, where you want to be by the end of the year, and mind the gap. Now.
Step up. Decide. Take massive action. Get momentum. Take what you want and make it yours. Live in alignment with what you really want and get clear on WHY you really want it.
Where are your goals? Are they written down? In your head? On your phone? Pull them up, take a look, and do a quick assessment. Where are you with your most important goals – your biggest rocks?
What are your top three compelling musts? Not shoulds. Musts.
It’s easy to let a year get away, so let’s bust out of our summer slump before it really sets in. Get clear on what you want to achieve and accomplish (there is a difference: achievement is completing tasks imposed from the outside, while accomplishment is the fulfillment derived from engaging in an absorbing activity of personal choice.)
What makes the biggest difference in the quality of people’s lives? Having a purpose larger than ourselves. Pursuing that purpose and feeling progress every day. Serving others. Being intentional with our lives. Sharing the best of ourselves to help others.
Need help getting out of that summer slump and getting back on track toward what you really want out of life?
I’m here for you.
