Here’s more of Jamie’s story…
“I soon realized that even though I was the lucky one who was saved from drowning in that Great Lakes rip current, surviving that near-death experience didn’t necessarily mean I was going to live a long life. I also realized that what is more important than how long I live, is how I live.
Around the time of that fateful day, I was at the end of a failed relationship, out of shape, living paycheck to paycheck, owned a house that wasn’t worth what I owed on it, and was an emotional wreck with very little to live for.
Yet deep down, I knew I had further to fly.
On the bright side, I still had Mackie, my wonderful dog. I still had my Mom who was living alone in her 80s and who I would soon ‘kidnap’ so I could care for her at my house. And, I had a great job at the University of Michigan with many friends looking out for me.
My favorite quote was, “a setback is nothing but a setup for a comeback” and that was what I needed. My comeback came with a new purpose in life: to help make sure what almost happened to me in Lake Michigan that day didn’t happen to anyone else.
Ten years later I have handed leadership of the water safety community I founded to a worthy successor, yet I will always be a drowning prevention advocate and always be looking for ways to give back – including wading into this exciting new online ‘knowledge industry’ with you.
I had been a goalsetter since fifth grade when I declared I would win the school spelling bee (and did). Later, working my way through college, I launched a photography business, a video production business, a graphic design business, and a deejay business.
Today, I still love my day job at U-M and am excited about revisiting my entrepreneurial roots by launching this new digital creator business while continuing to pay my good fortune forward – sharing the best of what I’ve learned over the years to help communicators advance, lead, and succeed in their jobs and find more fulfillment in their lives.”
